Tomorrow’s Speaker: Dr. Andrea Tarnecki

Director, Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory
This week, the Point Clear Rotary Club is pleased to welcome Dr. Andrea Tarnecki, Assistant Extension Professor and Director of the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory on Dauphin Island.
Originally from northern Ohio and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, Dr. Tarnecki developed an interest in aquatic life at an early age. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University before completing her Ph.D. at Auburn University. After several years at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, she returned to Auburn in 2021 to lead the Shellfish Laboratory.
As a microbiologist, Dr. Tarnecki focuses her research on oyster aquaculture, microbial ecology, and seafood safety. Her work connects scientific research with the real-world needs of Gulf Coast oyster farmers, helping address challenges that can affect oyster health, production, and the long-term success of the region’s growing aquaculture industry.
During her presentation, Dr. Tarnecki will take us behind the scenes at the Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory and show us where oyster research begins. She will explain how staff and students produce baby oysters in the laboratory’s hatchery and how those tiny oysters ultimately become the foundation for research and commercial oyster farming along the Gulf Coast.
For those of us who live along Mobile Bay and the Gulf Coast, this is an opportunity to learn more about an industry and ecosystem that are quite literally in our backyard — and the science being conducted on Dauphin Island to support their future.
We look forward to welcoming Dr. Tarnecki and learning more about the fascinating journey from the hatchery to the Gulf!
