Tomorrow’s Speaker: Robert “Rob” Gourlay
Tomorrow, the Point Clear Rotary Club is pleased to welcome Robert “Rob” Gourlay, Director of the Fairhope Public Library.
Rob became Library Director in January 2025 following the retirement of longtime director Tamara Dean. Having served the library since 2015 as Circulation Department Head and Assistant Director, Rob brought nearly a decade of institutional knowledge and community-focused leadership to the position. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from Florida State University and a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama.
His first year as director coincided with an exciting chapter in the library’s history. In 2025, the Fairhope Public Library celebrated its 125th anniversary and opened its long-awaited second-story expansion—an achievement 18 years in the making. The newly renovated floor includes a Teen Services Department with more than 1,500 square feet of study, media, and gathering spaces, as well as a MakerSpace studio featuring 3D printers, LEGO robotics kits, sewing equipment, and other creative resources.
The community played an important role in bringing the new space to life. During the “Book-It Brigade” in March 2025, volunteers passed more than 4,000 books hand-to-hand to fill the shelves of the new Teen Space. Funding for the overall renovation came through a partnership involving the City of Fairhope, the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, community donations, and grants.
The library also continued to earn recognition across Baldwin County, receiving two Gulf Coast Media 2025 Best of Baldwin awards. It was once again named the “Best Place for Kids to Have Fun” and also received the award for “Best Place for Kids on the Eastern Shore.”
Join us tomorrow as Rob discusses the library’s growth, its evolving role in the community, and what lies ahead for one of Fairhope’s most enduring public institutions.swers in the face of extraordinary circumstances.
