This Week’s Speaker: Blakeley Ellis, Executive Director, Coastal Conservation Association Alabama
Hosted by, Wesley Carpenter
A native of Gulf Shores, Blakeley’s passion for conservation began on the waters of coastal Alabama, where he spent countless hours fishing with his father and developing a deep appreciation for the Gulf Coast’s natural resources. What began as volunteer service with CCA Alabama eventually became a career dedicated to protecting and enhancing Alabama’s marine environment. Since being named Executive Director in 2014, Blakeley has helped lead one of the state’s most influential conservation organizations, advocating for sustainable fisheries, habitat restoration, and responsible stewardship of our coastal resources.

Founded in 1977 by a small group of recreational anglers concerned about severe overfishing along the Texas coast, CCA has grown into a nationwide organization with more than 120,000 members. The organization’s early efforts helped secure landmark conservation victories, including protections for redfish and speckled trout populations that were once in serious decline. Today, CCA chapters span the Gulf Coast, Atlantic Coast, and Pacific Coast, all united by a mission to conserve marine resources and protect recreational fishing opportunities.
Here in Alabama, CCA has become a leading voice for marine conservation. The organization has supported fisheries research, fish-tagging programs, habitat restoration projects, and partnerships with marine scientists and universities. CCA Alabama has also played a major role in expanding the state’s nationally recognized artificial reef program, helping create fish habitat and improve recreational fishing opportunities throughout our coastal waters. Alabama is widely regarded as having one of the most extensive artificial reef systems in the world, and CCA has been a key partner in that success.
During his presentation, Blakeley will share insights into the conservation challenges facing our coastal waters, the collaborative efforts underway to protect marine ecosystems, and how anglers, conservationists, researchers, and community members can work together to ensure healthy fisheries for future generations.
Whether you’re an avid fisherman, a coastal resident, or simply someone who values Alabama’s natural resources, this promises to be an informative and engaging program about one of the Gulf Coast’s most important conservation success stories.
