Tomorrow’s Speaker Spotlight: Michael Herzog

Hosted by, Larry Cerf

Michael Herzog serves as General Manager of the historic Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, one of the Gulf Coast’s most iconic destinations and a member of the Marriott International Autograph Collection. Throughout his career at the resort, Herzog has held several key leadership positions, including Director of Food & Beverage, Resort Manager, and ultimately General Manager.

Originally established in 1847 and located on the shores of Mobile Bay near Fairhope and Point Clear, the Grand Hotel is widely recognized as “The Queen of Southern Resorts.” Under Herzog’s leadership, the property successfully balanced modernization with preservation, including a major renovation completed in 2018 that enhanced guest rooms, dining venues, spa facilities, and event spaces while maintaining the resort’s historic character and traditions.

Herzog is known for rising through the operational ranks rather than following a traditional corporate management path. His leadership philosophy emphasizes exceptional service, employee engagement, and organizational culture. The Grand has earned a reputation for remarkable employee longevity, multigenerational staff relationships, and cherished traditions such as afternoon tea, historical presentations, and the daily sunset cannon firing.

A strong advocate for employee recognition and guest loyalty, Herzog has frequently highlighted the importance of staff dedication in creating memorable guest experiences. During a ceremony honoring longtime employee Veryl Coleman’s 50 years of service, Herzog noted that Coleman treated the hotel “as if he owns it,” reflecting the culture of pride and commitment that defines the resort.

Today, the Grand Hotel remains a major economic and tourism driver for Baldwin County and Alabama’s Eastern Shore. The resort features more than 400 guest rooms, extensive conference and wedding facilities, the renowned Lakewood Golf Club on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a luxury spa and wellness center, and multiple dining and event venues.

Beyond its role as a premier resort destination, the Grand Hotel occupies a unique place in American history, having served as a Civil War recovery hospital, hosted World War II Operation Ivory Soap training activities, survived multiple hurricanes and reconstructions, and maintained longstanding ties to Alabama tourism development through the Retirement Systems of Alabama.
