This Week at Point Clear Rotary: Fitness for Seniors

This week, the Point Clear Rotary Club is pleased to spotlight a timely and impactful program focused on fitness for seniors, led by two professionals with deep expertise in exercise science and applied wellness. Club member Katie Cokeley will be joined by Dr. Mark Deaton for an engaging discussion on how intentional, evidence-based physical activity can enhance longevity, independence, and quality of life in older adults.

About Dr. Mark Deaton
Dr. Mark Deaton is an Associate Professor of Exercise Science with nearly 20 years of experience in higher education and clinical exercise settings. Prior to academia, he served as the lead exercise physiologist for a cardiac rehabilitation unit, translating evidence-based research into real-world patient outcomes. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential. His professional service includes work on NSCA Membership and DEI Committees, contributions to the Carolina’s Research Symposium, and ongoing efforts to align exercise science programs with national standards. Dr. Deaton’s research interests span technology-based interventions for cognitive processing, correction of muscular imbalances, and strategies to enhance protein synthesis in older populations.

About Katie Cokeley
Katie Cokeley is an active member of the Point Clear Rotary Club and currently serves as the Director of Graduate Admissions at United States Sports University (USSU). In addition to admissions leadership, she supports alumni engagement and assists with athletic compliance initiatives. Katie holds a BS in Fitness Development and an MS in Exercise Science from SUNY Cortland, where she was also a varsity basketball athlete. Her professional background includes leadership roles in private personal training and operations management, strengthening her expertise in people development and program execution. Katie is currently pursuing her Ed.D. and preparing for the CSCS credential, with a long-term vision of serving as an Athletic Director at the collegiate level.

Together, Katie and Dr. Deaton will provide practical insights, research-driven perspectives, and actionable takeaways tailored to aging populations—reinforcing Rotary’s commitment to health, education, and community well-being. This program aligns squarely with a forward-looking approach to preventive care and lifelong wellness.
