🎤 Tomorrow’s Speaker:

Justin Hammers Park Ranger & Urban Forester @ Flying Creek Nature Preserve

hosted by, The Club

Tomorrow’s Speaker: Justin Hammers

We are pleased to welcome Justin Hammers, who will share an in-depth look at the Fairhope Flying Creek Nature Preserve, a signature conservation initiative transforming how our community engages with the natural environment.

A recent Gulf Coast Media feature highlighted how the Preserve—often referred to as “The Way Things Used to Be…Salt”—is shaping into a cornerstone project for ecological restoration and community access. Members of the Salt organization were offered a preview of new trails, revitalized habitats, and long-term preservation strategies that honor the region’s environmental legacy.

To complement today’s program, we encourage members to revisit our club’s own feature story, “Meet the Heroes Behind the Butterfly Panels at Flying Creek,” which highlights the creative and ecological contributions behind the Preserve’s butterfly panels and celebrates the individuals who bring this vision to life.

Justin’s insights provide a valuable vantage point for understanding how environmental stewardship and community development intersect across the Eastern Shore.

🌍 Newsletter Fun Fact

The Rotary Foundation was founded in 1917 with just $26.50 in its account.

From this remarkably humble beginning, the Foundation has evolved into one of the most trusted and impactful charitable organizations in the world. What started as a modest contribution—intended simply to “do good in the world”—has grown into a global engine for service, innovation, and humanitarian impact.

Today, the Rotary Foundation:

  • Drives the global effort to eradicate polio, investing more than $2.1 billion in partnership with the WHO, CDC, and Gates Foundation.
  • Funds peace fellowships, cultivating the next generation of global leaders committed to conflict resolution and community resilience.
  • Supports sustainable international projects in clean water, sanitation, maternal health, disease prevention, literacy, economic development, and disaster response.
  • Empowers clubs worldwide with district and global grants that transform local service ideas into high-impact, scalable initiatives.

The story of the Foundation’s growth—from $26.50 to a multibillion-dollar philanthropic platform—demonstrates the long-term power of vision, collaboration, and Rotary’s unwavering commitment to service above self. It is a compelling reminder that meaningful change often begins with a single act of generosity.

It is well that there is no one without fault; for he would not have a friend in the world.
