This week, the Point Clear Rotary Club had the privilege of welcoming Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Dave Friedel, the manager of the H.L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport in Fairhope. With 27 years of service in the United States Air Force and extensive leadership experience in aviation, Lt. Col. Friedel brought a wealth of knowledge and vision to share with our members.

During his presentation, he gave us a closer look at the airport’s role in our community — far beyond what many might expect. While some may view local airports as simply “private hangars for hobby pilots,” Dave explained how the Callahan Airport serves as a powerful engine for Baldwin County’s economic growth, tourism, and business development. A 2020 study showed that the airport generates more than $28 million annually in economic activity, a number that continues to rise as our region grows.

Dave highlighted several key milestones and exciting projects:

  • In June, the airport successfully hosted the 28th annual Air Race Classic, welcoming over 100 female pilots and aviation professionals from across the country. The event filled local hotels, brought hundreds of visitors downtown to shop and dine, and generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct economic impact. Even more importantly, it introduced many new people to the charm of Fairhope.
  • The airport has undergone a major transition in management of its fixed-base operator (FBO), resulting in a stronger financial outlook and improved services for pilots and travelers.
  • Significant construction and development projects are underway, including new hangars, expanded facilities, and a brand-new terminal scheduled to open in October — a $2 million project that will provide a beautiful, modern gateway for visitors.
  • Looking ahead, the airport plans to resurface and strengthen its main runway, expand taxiways, improve its weather monitoring system, and continue growing hangar capacity to meet demand.

Perhaps one of the most encouraging updates was Dave’s report on the airport’s financial independence. For many years, the airport relied heavily on city support to sustain operations. Thanks to new revenue streams, development projects, and stronger partnerships, that need is steadily decreasing. Within the next five years, the airport is expected to operate without city funding — a remarkable turnaround that will benefit both the city and the region.

Beyond the numbers and projects, Lt. Col. Friedel emphasized what the airport represents: opportunity. Whether it is pilots fueling up on their way to vacation, students training through the aviation academy partnership with Coastal Alabama Community College, or local businesses gaining easier access to clients and markets, the Callahan Airport serves as a vital connector for Baldwin County and beyond.

Our club was inspired by his vision and his dedication, both to his country through decades of military service and now to our community through leadership in aviation.

Thank you, Dave, for taking the time to share your expertise and outlook with us. We look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of the H.L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport under your leadership.
