This week, the Point Clear Rotary Club welcomed Dr. Eric G. Mackey, Alabama’s State Superintendent of Education, hosted by Craig Helms. A dedicated educator and seasoned leader, Dr. Mackey delivered an inspiring and data-driven overview of the progress and priorities shaping the future of education in our state.

Appointed in 2018, Dr. Mackey has led the Alabama State Department of Education with a sharp focus on innovation, equity, and workforce readiness. At the heart of his work is the state’s strategic plan, Alabama Achieves, which champions key initiatives including the Alabama Literacy Act, expanded STEM and Career Technical Education, and a commitment to educating the “whole child.”

Under his leadership, Alabama has seen marked improvements in both academic outcomes and career readiness. Graduation rates have climbed to 91%, and Alabama now leads the South-Central region in workforce development. In 2022, the state was the only one in the nation to show improvement in both reading and math on the Nation’s Report Card—rising 12 spots in national rankings.

Dr. Mackey also emphasized the importance of empowering educators through professional development. Alabama now ranks in the top five nationwide for producing new National Board Certified Teachers, and more than 18,000 early childhood educators have been trained in the science of reading.

What resonated most with members was Dr. Mackey’s deep-rooted passion for public education and his belief in partnerships across sectors. His work extends far beyond the classroom—he currently serves on over 30 boards, reflecting a strong commitment to aligning education with economic development, community needs, and global partnerships.

Before taking the helm as state superintendent, Dr. Mackey’s journey began in the classroom as a science teacher, then principal, and later superintendent of the Jacksonville City School System. His perspective remains grounded in those early days, with a lasting appreciation for the transformative role of great teachers and strong schools.

As a former Rotary Club president and active community volunteer, Dr. Mackey’s visit was also a reminder of the shared values between education and Rotary—service, leadership, and making a difference.

We thank Dr. Mackey for his time, his insights, and for his continued dedication to Alabama’s students and future.
