Rotarian David Daniell was host to last week’s speaker, Stephen A. Ewell, Captain, United States Navy (Retired). Capt. Ewell completed a thirty-year Naval career which spanned aviation and surface ship communities, offering the privilege of aviation squadron and surface ship commands. He served on the staff of United States European Command, Stuttgart Germany from 2001 until 2015 as the Chief of Policy for Africa and the Middle East and later as the Executive Director of the Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence Directorate. Leaving the Navy in 2005, he was appointed Director, Interoperability Directorate to interface with Departments of State and Defense, NATO and partner nation Foreign Ministries to improve multinational interoperability for battlefield and humanitarian operations. Retiring from military service in 2015, he served as a senior advisor to the Department of Defense and NATO for multinational operations until 2020. Capt. Ewell is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and holds a master’s degree in National Security Studies from the Naval War College. He and his wife Pam returned from Europe in 2016 and live in Fairhope.
